Running is a great way to stay active, but it can sometimes lead to injuries, especially if you're increasing your distance or speed too quickly. Some of the most common running injuries include:

Shin Splints: common running injury that cause pain along the front or inner edge of the shinbone. They often result from overuse, poor footwear, or a sudden increase in running intensity or distance.

Runner’s Knee: condition that typically causes pain in the front of the knee. The pain typically worsens when running, climbing stairs, kneeling, sitting, and squatting.

Plantar Fasciitis: A condition where the thick band of tissue along the bottom of the foot becomes irritated, leading to heel or arch pain. In runners, it’s often caused by repetitive impact, tight calf muscles, or improper footwear.

Achilles Tendinitis:  Is the inflammation of the tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel, often causing pain or stiffness at the back of the ankle. In runners, it’s commonly triggered by overtraining, tight calves, or sudden increases in mileage or intensity.

IT Band Syndrome: IT band syndrome happens when a band of tissue on the outside of your thigh gets tight or irritated, causing pain on the outside of your knee. It’s common in runners and can be caused by doing too much too soon, weak hips, or the way you run.

Physiotherapy can play an important role in both recovering from and preventing these injuries. A physiotherapist will assess your movement, strength, and flexibility to find the root cause of your pain. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, personalized exercises, and advice on proper warm-up, stretching, and running form. If needed, they can also recommend changes to your running shoes or training plan.

One of the biggest benefits of physiotherapy is that it’s tailored to your specific needs. Whether you're a new runner or training for a marathon, a physiotherapist can help you stay healthy and active. Early treatment can help prevent a minor issue from becoming a long-term injury. If you're dealing with pain or discomfort while running, Premier Physiotherapy is here to help.
