Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialized type of care aimed at addressing issues related to the vestibular system — a part of your inner ear responsible for balance and spatial orientation.

Vestibular rehabilitation begins with an assessment. A trained physiotherapist will evaluate your vestibular function, balance, and symptoms. They will aim to determine the causes of your condition, which can range from infections and inner ear problems to head injuries.

Based on the findings of the initial assessment, the physiotherapist will design a tailored treatment plan for you. Depending on your specific needs, they may prescribe gaze stabilization exercises, balance training, or habituation routines. These are sometimes combined with manual maneuvers or therapeutic modalities. The goal is to improve balance, reduce dizziness, and support symptom recovery.

Examples of Conditions Vestibular Physiotherapy Can Help With

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV): Sudden, brief episodes of dizziness or spinning that can cause disorientation and discomfort.
  • Vestibular Neuritis and Labyrinthitis: Often caused by inner ear infections, these can lead to vertigo, imbalance, and dizziness.
  • Meniere's Disease: Recurring episodes of vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss affecting balance and inner ear health.
  • Post-Concussion: After a head injury, symptoms may include dizziness, visual disturbances, and balance challenges.
  • Cervicogenic Dizziness: Dizziness that stems from issues in the neck or cervical spine, often involving balance or spatial confusion.
